In the Press: 3 tips for cooking up a stylish kitchen

1. What are the key ingredients to creating a stylish functional kitchen?

For a truly seamless and high-functioning kitchen, be sure to factor your overall lifestyle in at the design stage. Before you design your kitchen, know what you need from your space and consider the following: Will you be entertaining in the space? How many people typically cook in your household at one time?

Given all the amazing products on the market these days, we always recommend choosing something that meets your functional needs while fulfilling your style goals. The main things we consider are functional finishes, adequate storage space and lighting to suit how you will truly use the space. We recommend selecting finishes that are practical and require minimal maintenance on a regular basis, are easy to clean, and are durable for daily wear. Our clients specifically request surfaces and finishes that were hardwearing and efficient, to meet and withstand the demands of their lifestyle.

Another factor to consider is how much storage space is needed? Overall, having a sufficient, smartly designed storage system makes it easy to keep your kitchen neat and tidy.

We love a good kitchen island. Often used for cooking, dining, entertaining and storage, it can be a wise investment when done right. In order to be functional, the island should measure a minimum three by four feet, particularly if you intend to integrate appliances or seating. For dining, give each person a 24-inch berth. Aside from the island itself, plan for a four-foot-wide path around it to allow for foot traffic and cooking activity. If you’re using the island as a table, you’ll need about 15 inches to accommodate seats and knees. Given the island’s key role in the kitchen, storage should be a factor – and similarly to your cabinets, your lifestyle will define what you’ll need.

2. Where should we spend most of the budget?

Cabinets are typically the most expensive part of your kitchen project, always consider to work with a professional designer, like our firm, to ensure you’re factoring function, quality, the latest trends and your lifestyle into your decision at the design stage.

3. What are the options for Countertops today?

Countertops are a key factor when designing your kitchen with options now suited to every functional need, aesthetic preference and budget. But not all countertops are created equal.

The most popular and my go is Quartz, offering high durability and the look of marble. Concrete and various options like stone marble are high-end options and, while beautiful, they can be cost-prohibitive depending on the budget and the size of the countertop.

Material aside, finishes also play a role in practicality, aesthetics and price. You can choose honed matte, glossy or textured surfaces offer different looks for your space.
